The Waveroller is making waves in harnessing reliable and predictable wave power for a sustainable tomorrow.
Wave energy has long been the overlooked underdog in the clean energy arena, but Finland’s AW-Energy is ready to make a splash with its Waveroller technology. It plans to deliver up to 1 MW of power while resting on the ocean floor.
In a world buzzing with climate change concerns, the potential of wave energy seems to be a no-brainer, yet progress in this sector has been frustratingly slow. AW Energy’s Waveroller aims to change that narrative.
The journey of the Waveroller began with a light bulb moment back in 1993 when a diver, inspired by the movement of a shipwreck hatch, envisioned harnessing the power of waves to generate electricity.
Fast forward to 2019, and the first commercial Waveroller, a 350-kW unit, was successfully connected to the grid off the Portuguese coast. However, the challenges posed by the harsh marine environment became evident when the unit was inspected two years later. Despite the battering from salt, corrosion, and barnacles, AW-Energy proudly declared the system’s durability and quality.
